COSPLAY TUTORIAL — HOW TO PAINT-DYE LACE APPLIQUÉS

This design has some beautiful appliqués, but we know that lace ones come in limited color selections. Here’s a tutorial on how to paint-dye lace.

Make sure you select the proper dye for the fabric you are using, as there are dyes for synthetic fabric and natural fabric. Lace made from rayon is best for the following technique.

You will need: paintbrushes, plastic or newspaper, paper towels, a water mist bottle, plastic paint palette or a divided plate.

  1. Squeeze out one or two drops of dye onto your paint palette. Dye is very concentrated, so you’re going to want to dilute this. Add about 5 to 10 drops of warm water and stir. By adding more water to your dye, you will create a pale or pastel version of your dye.

  2. Now, soak your lace appliqué in warm water, this helps to absorb and blend your dye. After you soak your appliqué, roll in a towel and gently squeeze the excess water away. Keep your mist bottle handy to dampen your lace appliqué as needed.

  3. Place your appliqué on plastic or layers of newspaper covered with paper towels. Now you’re ready to paint.

  4. Dip your paintbrush in the prepared dye and apply to lace. Use a fine-tip brush for details and a bigger brush for large areas.

  5. If your colors look too light, you can always overdye. It’s better to add multiple layers of dye as lace absorbs the color quickly. If your colors are too dark, just mist with water to further dilute the dye, then blot away the excess dye with a paper towel.

  6. To dry the lace, we recommend using a blow dryer, since air drying can cause a spotty appearance.

  7. To set the dye, using a wool setting, iron the lace appliqué on the wrong side for about two minutes. This sets the dye and softens up your appliqué. Before you begin ironing, place a scrap piece of fabric or muslin underneath your appliqué to prevent any dye from transferring to your ironing board.
